Selling second-hand wedding dresses

Ok so I’ve been thinking about selling my wedding dresses (yes, dresses – long story) for a while now but have put it off as I thought it would be a massive task. Today I finally bit the bullet and got everything together. I have found loads of sites that you can sell second-hand wedding dresses on, but it took a LOT of searching. So, I thought I’d make a list where they are all in one place 🙂 These are in no particular order and you have to create accounts with them (obvs).

How to make your own washing powder

My jar of washing gloop

My jar of washing gloop

I saw this on TV so found it on the lovely Claire Gay’s blog. It’s not really powder it looks more like gloop! I tend to make up two batches at the same time as this much fills my jar and will last me about 2 months.

I use Sainsbury’s pure soap made from palm oil. It’s £1.50 for 4 bars. Tesco do an alternative but I can never find it! NOTE: the soap has to be made from vegetable oil or it will kill your washing machine.

I use these soda crystals which are available from most supermarkets for 90p. This bag will give us 4 batches!

I use these essential oils which I buy from eBay from this seller. Two bottles of 10ml essential oil in Lemon cost me £3.19 including postage and should last me at least 12 batches. I chose lemon because I like the smell; you can choose whichever smell you prefer just make sure it is essential oil and not room oil.

I have 2 of these jars (£2.69 from Clas Ohlson) and each jar holds 2 litres which is 2 batches.

OK, so I’ve told which stuff you need, lets go through how to make one batch of washing gloop:

Ingredients:

  • 1 bar of soap
  • 250mls of soda crystals
  • Water
  • 35 drops of essential oil

Equipment:

  • Measuring jug
  • Big pan
  • Grater
  • Something to grate on/into
  • Funnel
  • Glass jar with clip lid

Method:

  • Put 1 pint of water in the big pan and boil
  • Grate the bar of soap whilst the water is heating up
NOTE: the smaller it is grated the quicker it will melt
  • Once boiling, turn the heat down so the water is simmering
  • Add the grated soap and stir
  • Stir occasionally. It should take about 10-15 mins to melt completely
NOTE: it will look like wallpaper paste when it has melted
  • Measure out the 250mls of soda crystals and add enough water to make a pint of soda crystal water mix
  • Add this mixture to the melted soap (still on the heat)
  • Add about 35 drops of oil (this depends on how strong you like the smell, you can use more/less)
  • Mix together and turn the heat off
  • The consistency will change and will start to get thicker
  • Leave to cool for about 10 mins before transferring into your jar. Use the funnel (or a rolled up flexible chopping board) to avoid major mess!
  • Leave the lid off for a good hour to let it cool down

How to use:
When you’re ready to use it you’ll need something like a hairspray lid. Spoon 2-3 tablespoons of gloop into your lid and place this in your drum. You will need to add conditioner as normal, if you use it. You might notice some lumps of gloop going around the machine to begin with. Don’t panic! These will go during the cycle.I do about 9 washes a week in my house and we wash most things at 30. I’ve worked out that this stuff costs me £0.88 a batch which will last me a month. That’s about 2p a wash!

This stuff can get out red stains on white (even after being left untreated for a few days!) and can get out manky baby stains. I will never buy washing powder again!
